Old man winter brought the cold and snow last weekend, but that didn’t stop folks from coming out to Johnny D’s to celebrate the season with us. The band had some super-sized percussion thanks to Gary Mendoza and Amado Rodriguez. Add in one Adam Payne and one Adam Dehner to make an extra special night.
(thanks to Natalie for the great photos)
The handsome and talented Henry Terrones (A.K.A. “The Shank”) joined the band on bass this past Friday at The Edgewater Cafe.

Beautiful day for a toast.. thanks gents… Mik

WASHINGTON, Nov 20 (OneWorld) - Women are being disproportionately affected by the U.S. mortgage crisis and economic plunge, said a panel of women leaders Wednesday, urging a strong woman-focused response from the federal government.
In Rhode Island, the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country, one woman has not been able to find a job for the past eight months and is losing her house to the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Another, struggling to take care of her 14-year-old granddaughter because her own daughter is in jail, is a tenant in a building that is being foreclosed. She is being evicted by the bank, even though she is willing to pay rent.
These women’s stories, told by Sara Mersha, the executive director of Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE) in Rhode Island, are part of what she calls the “economic Katrina.”
Mersha spoke along with other women’s rights advocates at a teleconference sponsored by the Ms. Foundation for Women called, “Lifted Up or Left Out? Economic Stimulus Policy that Benefits Low-Income Women.” The experts discussed the challenges facing women in the United States today and policies that could make a difference.
Mersha said the current sub-prime mortgage crisis is similar to the 2005 hurricane not only in terms of scale — the number of people affected — but also who is being hit the hardest. She said that in Rhode Island, most of the foreclosures and evictions are happening in poor communities and neighborhoods with African-American or Latino residents. DARE is doing a local research study concerning the crisis. While visiting homes being foreclosed, Mersha noticed another disturbing trend: “There are disproportionate numbers of women behind those doors,” she said.

Our good friend and musical companion Jeremy Parker got himself hitched last weekend at a beautiful ceremony in Princeton, MA. One week before that we took the opportunity to fill him full of food and booze on one of his last nights out as a single man. He was not too drunk to tear up some keyboards with the band. Other special guests that night included Jeff Buckridge and “Cowboy” Ben Alman.
This past week we played a benefit for the Children’s Tumor Foundation at the Seaport Hotel in Boston. The Foundation works with people and families affected by neurofibromatoses and is helping to fund research for treatment and some day a cure. Guest speakers at the event included former Massachusetts governor Mike Dukakis and his wife Kitty.
It was Los Sugar Kings in the round today for the Northern Essex Community College Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.
A younger audience than we’re used to, but they were enthusiastic!

This week I had a chance to stop by Stephen Marsh Mastering in Hollywood where LSK was mastered. Thier facilty is beautiful and it was great to meet them in person. Stephen was the mastering engineer on the album assisted by Stephanie Villa. They’ve got golden ears.

We were really honored to be asked to take part in the garden dedication honoring the life of Nina Vickers. Though neither Patino or I ever met Nina in person (other than seeing her in her Lobster costume in Salem, MA), we feel humbled & inspired by the amount of life she was able to lead and the way her life improved the lives of those around her. Thank you Nina for setting such a great example of a life lived to the fullest. More pictures of the dedication ceremony…
